Hydration and Golf: Why Staying Hydrated is Essential on the Costa Blanca

Playing golf under a scorching Costa Blanca sun is one of life's great pleasures — but it comes with a serious physical demand that many golfers underestimate: staying properly hydrated. Whether you're teeing off at Villamartín, Las Colinas, or Campoamor, the combination of heat, physical exertion, and sun exposure can lead to dehydration faster than you might expect.

Water represents more than 60% of our body weight. Every day, naturally through breathing, sweating, and urination, a significant amount of water leaves our body — and on a hot summer round of golf, those losses accelerate dramatically. The tricky part? Your body doesn't signal thirst until you've already lost approximately 2% of your body weight in water. By then, the effects on your performance and your body are already underway.

Why Is Golf Hydration So Important?

Physical Performance: Water is essential for maintaining body temperature, lubricating joints, and transporting the nutrients your muscles need for energy. Even slight dehydration can lead to decreased concentration, coordination, and endurance — all of which directly affect your game.

Injury Prevention: Dehydration increases the risk of muscle and joint injuries. Dehydrated muscles are more prone to fatigue and cramping, which can lead to strains, tension, and pain — exactly the kind of issues that bring golfers to our Torrevieja and San Miguel de Salinas clinics every summer.

Recovery: Proper hydration helps eliminate toxins from the body and speeds up recovery after a round of golf. It also helps reduce muscle soreness and pain in the days following intense play.

How Much Should You Drink?

The Institute of Medicine recommends that men consume a total of 3.7 litres of fluids per day, including both drinks and food. For women, the recommendation is 2.7 litres. On a hot summer day on the Costa Blanca, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C, these figures should be considered a minimum — not a target.

A practical rule: don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. Drink water at regular intervals throughout the day, and especially before, during, and after your round of golf.

Practical Tips for Staying Hydrated on the Golf Course

Drink regularly: Start hydrating the evening before your round, not just on the morning of. Aim for a glass of water every 2 to 3 holes during play.

Choose the right beverages: Water is the best option, but electrolyte drinks can also be beneficial to replace minerals lost through sweat, particularly on longer rounds or in extreme heat.

Avoid dehydrating beverages: Limit caffeine and alcohol intake on playing days — both increase dehydration. That post-round beer at the clubhouse is fine, but balance it with water.

Monitor signs of dehydration: Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and dark urine are warning signs. If you experience these symptoms during a round, stop play, drink immediately, and rest in the shade.

The Role of Chiropractic Care

Hydration and chiropractic care go hand in hand for golfers. Here's how chiropractic can support your body through the summer season:

Spinal alignment: Proper spinal alignment is essential for correct posture and optimal range of motion during your swing. Chiropractic adjustments can help correct misalignments that may develop or worsen when the body is dehydrated and under physical stress.

Injury prevention and treatment: Dehydrated muscles and joints are more vulnerable to strain and injury. Chiropractors can identify and treat muscle and joint imbalances before they become major issues, and provide advice on specific stretches and exercises to strengthen vulnerable areas.

Performance enhancement: By optimising nervous system function and improving joint mobility, chiropractic care helps golfers achieve better overall performance. A well-aligned body functioning optimally is less likely to fatigue and get injured on the course.

Hydration + Chiropractic = A Winning Formula

Combining proper hydration with regular chiropractic care creates a powerful synergy: your body stays better aligned, recovers faster, and performs more consistently — round after round, even in the height of a Costa Blanca summer.

FAQ

What are the first signs of dehydration during a round of golf?

Fatigue, dizziness, headaches, and dark-coloured urine are the most common early warning signs. If you experience any of these on the course, stop, drink water immediately, and rest in the shade.

How much water should I drink during a round of golf in summer?

On a hot day on the Costa Blanca, aim for at least 500ml of water per hour of play, in addition to your normal daily intake. Don't wait until you feel thirsty — by then, you're already mildly dehydrated.

Are sports drinks better than water for golfers?

Water is always the priority. Sports drinks with electrolytes can be a useful supplement on longer rounds or in extreme heat, to replace minerals lost through sweat — but avoid sugary drinks that can spike and crash your energy levels.

Can dehydration cause injuries on the golf course?

Yes. Dehydrated muscles are more prone to cramping, fatigue, and strain. Reduced concentration from dehydration can also affect your swing mechanics, increasing the risk of overuse injuries — particularly to the wrist, elbow, and lower back.

Can chiropractic care help with dehydration-related muscle pain?

Chiropractic care can't replace hydration, but it can help treat the muscle tension, joint stiffness, and spinal misalignments that often develop when the body is under physical stress from dehydration and heat. A session after a demanding summer round can significantly speed up your recovery.

Where can I see a chiropractor for golf-related issues near Torrevieja or San Miguel de Salinas?

Dr. Nicolas Frey sees patients at both clinics — Torrevieja (Calle Clemente Gosálvez 15) and San Miguel de Salinas (Calle Alberto Barberá 19) — by phone or WhatsApp appointment only.
